W O M X N is a photo narrative that tells the story of masculinity / femininity and everything in between. It is within this singular expression that the artist, Tré Akula, seeks to portray a modern depiction of what it means to be a queer womxn of colour in today’s social climate. In particular, the body is used as a medium to push the limitations on identity and gender performance.

“It has always been confusing to me how something as simple as how I’m dressed would change how I was being perceived” states Akula “Eventually, this confusion grew into a deep-rooted fascination with gender identity and how to empower myself while living my truth”

Nouveau Riche Vintage, a cornerstone of the Parkdale community, offered its clothing and studio space in support of this project. In its very essence, this narrative documents the exploration of the feminine and masculine without the confines of social norms.
