What does it mean to be a black star? Founded by Marcus Garvey as a part of the Back-to-Africa movement in 1919, the black star became a symbol of Pan-Africanism and anti-colonialism. Shot in Barbados and Ghana, this editorial provides visual language for the photographer, Junior Sealy, to explore themes like loyalty, brotherhood & connection.

 

 

"The idea was one of spontaneity: something that really came out of a connection. It was ToBi’s first time in Barbados on a family vacation, his manager prompted us to link and after that it was a brotherhood!   The shoot was very much a day of hanging, listening to music and talking about the way forward. We both believe strongly in culture and a positive representation.”
